Some of the best known cities and landscapes in the United States are well documented – the glitz of Las Vegas, the harsh heat of Death Valley in the Californian desert, the picturesque beauty of Yellowstone National Park with its spurting geysers, and the innovative architecture of Chicago.
Road trip anyone?
A great way to cover and see as much of the United States as possible is to take a road trip. Many of these have been immortalised in songs and books. Route 66 covers 2,400 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, the Pacific Coast Highway stretches up the coast of California for 930 miles, and the Great River Road follows the course of the mighty Mississippi as it winds its way from Minnesota down to New Orleans.
Natural phenomena
There is incredible natural phenomena within the United States like the Great Lakes, the world’s largest bodies of fresh water incorporating such cities as Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit and Cincinnati. The swamps and wildlife of the Everglades in Florida cover over a million acres, and the wild beauty of the Rocky Mountains offer some of the most spectacular views you will find in the United States.
Not far from there, for some daredevil activity while you are in the United States, you could try white-water rafting in Colorado. There are many companies who run trips along the Arkansas River so you can be sure they know what they are talking about.
Another well trodden path within the United States is the one taken to Niagara Falls where three separate waterfalls plunge almost 200ft into a rocky gorge. You can make your way to the bottom and take a trip on the Maid of the Mist boat which takes you right up close to the falls.
