Los Angeles is a large Southern California city that's famous for being the heart of America's film and television industries. The city, whose name means 'City of the Angels', is located in a vast coastal basin which on three sides is surrounded by tall mountains that reach up to and beyond 10,000 feet. Los Angeles has a famously warm, Mediterranean-style climate and an ethnically diverse population spread over the sprawling megalopolis - it's no surprise to find out it's the second-largest city in the United States after New York.
Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with what would later become Alta California. It was declared part of Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence and later purchased by the United States, becoming first a municipality and later a fully-fledged state in 1850. The city experienced a huge surge in growth when oil was discovered there and it's now a truly global city with a varied economy based on finance, fashion, media, culture, sports, technology and medicine.
With such a sizable city, it can be overwhelming knowing where to begin. Los Angeles has much to offer. Enjoy a day at the beach in Santa Monica or a good walk while shopping at the Farmers market. Everyone will love the city's wide selection of amusement parks and entertainment-industry based attractions. Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a 133 acre zoo that is home to 1,100 animals from over 250 species, 29 of which are endangered. You'll also find plenty of iconic sights here including the Hollywood sign, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Brothers. There's also the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where your favourite celebrities are immortalised with stars on the walkway.
With it's wide variety of attractions, Los Angeles is a great destination for families with children. Top locations include Disneyland, a world-famous amusement park with 8 themed lands, and Los Angeles Zoo, a zoo that has hiking trails to help make a perfect day out for families that enjoy staying active on holiday.
There is a never a dull moment in Los Angeles, with a calendar full of exciting events to keep you occupied whenever you visit. If you're visiting the city over New Year, head to Grand Park on New Year's Eve to enjoy good music, dancing and a show-stopping interactive countdown. Another glamorous New Year's event worth considering is the SoHo Dance 007 Masquerade Ball NYE. Don your finest tuxedo and enjoy a live performance by The Echo Project, along with party favours, an optional gourmet dinner and dancing.
