One of Asia's Best-Loved Airlines: Cathay Dragon
Cathay Dragon (legally known as Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Ltd and previously known as Dragonair) is a Hong Kong-based international regional airline. The airline's headquarters are at Cathay Dragon House at Hong Kong International Airport, and it was established in Hong Kong on 24th May 1985 by Kuang-Piu Chao, the airline's honorary chairman. The airline commenced operations in July 1985 with a Boeing 737-200 service from Kai Tak International Airport to Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Malaysia, with services initially departing to Phuket and Thailand as well as six secondary destinations in mainland China from 1986 onwards. The airline is proud to be the first local airline that made investment in local pilot training. In the late 1980s, the first generation of pilot students joined the pilot training scheme and became the first set of locally born and trained Chinese pilots. This heritage has continued with more than 150 cadets to date that have successfully completed the pilot training scheme. In 1987, the airline became the first Hong Kong-based airline to become a member of the International Air Transport Association. The airline started out with just one aircraft and developed into an award-winning Hong Kong-based carrier with more than forty aircraft. The airline has an extensive network that covers many of the most popular travel destinations and business hubs in the Asia Pacific region. The airline plays an increasingly pivotal role in connecting passengers from around the globe with mainland China.
